US Weekly is reporting that J is in talks to perform at the Super Bowl!
Justin Timberlake is getting back in the game. Thirteen years after his controversial Super Bowl halftime performance with Janet Jackson birthed the term “nipplegate” the 10-time Grammy winner — who’s currently working on his fifth solo album — has been asked to take the stage at the NFL championship in Minneapolis on February 4. Justin Timberlake doing a Las Vegas residency? That’s the rumor coming out of Sin City. Gossip Cop investigated, and has the exclusive on whether it’s real or a rumor.
According to the Las Vegas Sun, “Discussions have started about Justin Timberlake agreeing to a residency” at the new, 5,000-seat theater at the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino. The paper claims the information comes from a “solid source close to the involved parties.” The outlet then editorializes that “it would be delicious if Justin, one-time and long-ago boyfriend of Britney Spears, was on the Strip at the same time as the pop princess, whose hit ‘Britney: Piece of Me’ is at nearby Axis at Planet Hollywood.”
Gossip Cop looked into this report, and we’ve exclusively learned from a source close to Timberlake that there’s “no truth to this story.” While Timberlake has performed in Las Vegas on many occasions, a residency at the Monte Carlo is not happening.
Interestingly, this is the second time in six weeks that publications have wrongly reported that Timberlake was going to do a show in Las Vegas. A little more than six weeks ago, Gossip Cop busted In Touch for absurdly reporting that Timberlake was joining Spears for “a series of concerts” at Planet Hollywood. That story was entirely untrue, and the latest tale about him possibly doing his own residency in Las Vegas is similarly false.
What do these pairings – Beatles and Rolling Stones, Heart and Pat Benatar, Def Leppard and Poison, Backstreet Boys and NKOTB and Ludicrous and Nelly – have in common?
They are all music acts that some parents couldn’t tell apart. As stalwart, self-appointed members of the nation’s ever-changing racket squad, moms and dads traditionally label the next generation’s music as noise. Over the years, parent warnings to their offspring evolved from “Turn down the radio” and “Turn off that record player” to “Click off that MTV” and “What was that word I just heard in that song?”
To be sure, some savvy teens use music as a means to bond (or extract favors) from their parents by professing deep love for music of an older generation, while soccer moms in particular latch on to their daughters’ musical tastes in attempts to stay forever young.
Still, it’s no secret that contemporary music has been in a funk lately – and not in a good way. There are increasingly fewer songs with appeal beyond a small, segmented audience, let alone one that encompasses generations.
That fact was underlined a few weeks ago when Justin Timberlake released his new single, “Can’t Stop the Feeling” and it became the first song in history to be added immediately at every single mainstream top 40 station in the country.
Justin called in to the Rove & Sam Radio Show in Sydney, Australia yesterday morning to promote his smash single, ‘CAN’T STOP THE FEELING!’. When asked about new music and an upcoming tour, JT said,
“I have definitely been working on new music. I don’t want to put an exact date on it, but it will be in the near future. I’ll put a record out and go on tour, let’s go coast to coast again.”
I think it’s safe to say we can get excited about a 20/20 Experience follow up in the near future. Does anyone else remember the rumours during the summer of 2012 and by early January 2013, JT announced not one, but TWO new albums?!
